چکیده

Using data drawn from the DEEP2 and DEEP3 Galaxy Redshift Surveys, we investigate the relationship between the environment and the structure of galaxies residing on the red sequence at intermediate redshift. Within the massive (10 < log10(M /h−2 M ) < 11) earlytype population at 0.4 < z < 1.2, we find a significant correlation between local galaxy overdensity (or environment) and galaxy size, such that early-type systems in higher density regions tend to have larger effective radii (by ∼0.5 h−1 kpc or 25 per cent larger) than their counterparts of equal stellar mass and Sérsic index in lower density environments. This observed size–density relation is consistent with a model of galaxy formation in which the evolution of early-type systems at z < 2 is accelerated in high-density environments such as groups and clusters and in which dry, minor mergers (versus mechanisms such as quasar feedback) play a central role in the structural evolution of the massive, early-type galaxy

Pure Luminosity Evolution Models: Too Few Massive Galaxies at Intermediate and High Redshift

We compare pure luminosity evolution (PLE) models with recent data at low and high redshift. These models assume that massive galaxies were assembled and formed most of their stars at high redshift (z > 3) and have evolved without merging or substantial dust obscuration since then. Our models span the full range of plausible metallicities, initial mass functions (IMF’s) and star formation histo...

A Population of Metal-poor Galaxies with ∼l* Luminosities at Intermediate Redshifts

We present new spectroscopy and metallicity estimates for a sample of 15 star-forming galaxies with redshifts in the range 0.29 – 0.42. These objects were selected in the KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS) via their strong emission lines seen in red objective-prism spectra. Originally thought to be intermediate-redshift Seyfert 2 galaxies, our new spectroscopy in the far red has rev...

The Effect of Environment on the Uv Color-magnitude Relation of Early-type Galaxies

We use GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer) near-UV (NUV) photometry of a sample of earlytype galaxies selected in SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) to study the UV color-magnitude relation (CMR). NUV − r color is an excellent tracer of even small amounts (∼ 1% mass fraction) of recent (. 1 Gyr) star formation and so the NUV − r CMR allows us to study the effect of environment on the recent star for...

The Cnoc2 Sample of Intermediate Redshift Galaxy Groups -the Powerhouse of Galaxy Evolution

The evolution of galaxies in groups may have important implications for the global evolution of star formation rate in the Universe, since many processes which operate in groups may suppress star formation, and the fraction of galaxies bound in groups at the present day is as high as ∼60%. We present an analysis of our sample of 0.3≤z≤0.55 groups, selected from the CNOC2 redshift survey and sup...

A coincidence of disturbed morphology and blue UV colour: minormergerdriven star formation in earlytype galaxies at z 0.6

We exploit multi-wavelength photometry of early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the COSMOS survey to demonstrate that the low-level star formation activity in the ETG population at intermediate redshift is likely to be driven by minor mergers. Splitting the ETGs into galaxies that show disturbed morphologies indicative of recent merging and those that appear relaxed, we find that ∼ 32% of the ETG popul...
